We had a wonderful & insightful interview with Chase Glenn, Director of LGBTQ+ Health Services & Enterprise Resources at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Chase is proud to fill this newly created role at MUSC, and he draws upon his own experiences as a transgendered man and his work at a non-profit serving the LGBTQ+ community to help guide his work.
In this interview Chase shares some covers many topics, including:
- His top priorities, which include examining the Human Rights Campaign’s Health Equity Index and getting a baseline for where MUSC is excelling and where there’s room or improvement.

Debra Wyatte, Chief Experience Officer at Cecilian Partners, is passionate about helping people have healthy homes and environments.
Though her role at Cecilian Partners, she helps builders and clients leverage technology to create a better customer experience and healthier homes.
With a move from the Mid-west to Colorado years ago, she experienced what a difference living in a community that optimized healthy options can make.
She says that in her Colorado community, there are sidewalks, many opportunities to be outside, hiking, biking, and more.
But, even in well-established older areas that may not have a set-up conducive to encouraging healthy activities, there’s plenty of things community members can do to improve their health.
At home, it’s important to ensure your water and air quality is great. You can also leverage natural light. Things as simple as changing your air filter and getting plants can be very helpful.

Beam Dental CEO, Alex Frommeyer, says dentistry is 10 years behind healthcare, but he and his team are actively changing that.
He says dental insurance reform is the change agent that will move dentistry into the digital future - by influencing the purchasing decisions, how care is delivered, and how dentistry is practiced overall.
They’re using data and technology to create an objective environment, where they can determine that the dental work was necessary AND high quality - instead of the current model where reimbursement is provided solely based on whether or not an activity happens (ie - the patient received a filling).
Then Beam team is working toward the goal of payers and providers working together to achieve better patient outcomes.
They want to ensure the entire experience is “easy, smart, and preventive.”
Another unique offering from Beam Dental is what they say is the first and only dental wellness program.
Through voluntary participation, members can use the Beam Brush, which collects data about their dental habits, and rewards positive actions (but doesn’t result in increased prices).

Despite an ever-aging population, the number of geriatricians has steadily decreased.
Geriatricians are needed in hospitals, in nursing homes, long-term care facilities, primary care, and more.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, nursing homes received some additional attention, but more work needs to be done, and it must continue after the pandemic is gone.
We talked to geriatrician Dr. Asif Merchant about:

Dr. Arvind Singhal, expert in Positive Deviance and professor at the University of Texas where he teaches the subject, says context, communication, and micro behaviors are the keys to identifying and understanding positive outliers.
Through positive deviance, people are able to solve problems or have better success without extra resources, and often against great odds.
Yet, somehow they persevere.
Arvind shares compelling examples of this - most notably the stories of two Indian villages that are tremendously successful at controlling the covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Uli Chettipally is the founder and president of InnovatorMD, and was a co-founder and former CTO of the CREST Network at Kaiser Permanente.
He is passionate about technology-enabled care that can improve clinical outcomes, and authored a book on the topic called “Punish the Machine! The Promise of Artificial Intelligence in Health Care.”
Through his work with the CREST Network, the team layered AI technology over Electronic Health Records to provide real-time data to physicians, allowing doctors to more easily assess patient risk. More than one-million patients per year go through the system.
Dr. Chettipally says the system is scaleable and is a very effective way to support both patients and physicians.
