Dr. Stephen Trzeciak says there has long been a compassion crisis in healthcare.
In this interview he tells us caring more is a key to reducing burnout, and says there is a ton of supporting data, which he and his co-author Dr. Anthony Mazzarelli share in their books Compassionomics and Wonder Drug. Compassion is a skill that people can learn, and it can be transformational.
Dr. Trzeciak is the Professor and Chair of Medicine, Cooper University Healthcare & Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. spent decades working the ICU.
He says he often meets people on the worst day of their lives, and by practicing compassion in his work he has experienced many positive impacts.

Valinda Rutledge, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at UpStream, is passionate about helping patients, and empowering them to take charge of their health.
She has a clinical background, and told us UpStream’s patient-focus is what drew her to the company. Valinda said a first-step of care in UpStream’s system is to meet face-to-face with patients to discuss their mediations.
UpStream works with primary care physicians providing value-based care to those who are older and who have chronic conditions, and embeds pharmacists into the PCP’s practice.
Valinda said their patients may have 10-12 medications due to comorbidities. Helping the patients understand the medications they’re prescribed is invaluable. It helps build a relationship with the patient, gives the patient the opportunity to talk about side effects they may be having, share troubles paying for the medication, and UpStream can even help synch the RX schedule so the patient isn’t going to the pharmacy constantly.
This interview was fascinating, and we were inspired by Valinda’s unrelenting dedication to partnering with patients.

What started as a personal journey for Reza Amin, CEO and founder of Bastion Health, became a mission to help other men.

In this interview with Reza and Dr.Justin Houman, Bastion Health Medical Director, we learned that 50% of infertility is due to male factors. We also learned that men tend to procrastinate getting healthcare - with many many not seeing a doctor until they’re middle aged!

Fueled by her experience working with children suffering from pneumonia, Elina Naydenova created Feebris, a company that offers AI-powered health monitoring solutions.
Elina knew she had to find a way to help after seeing first hand that pneumonia - and so many other diseases - while treatable, often turn deadly when there’s no little-to-no access to medical care.
With Feebris, home-health workers and community workers can use an app and kit of medical devices to give patients an AI-powered, clinically-reliable exam in just 5-10 minutes.
The devices give immediate feedback - even with no internet access - to the home-health or community-health worker. Care providers use that information to guide next steps, whether that’s a follow up in a few weeks, heading to the emergency room, or another option in between.
The Feebris system captures all the patient data, and can be shared with providers when the home-health or community-health worker gets to an area with internet. By utilizing non-clinical workers in the community, and empowering them with clinically-reliable equipment, it takes the burden off of providers, who are able to be informed about all of their patients while spending time with those at highest-risk.
Feebris started in the UK in 2018, and expanded to the US in 2022.

With the idea of a “Moneyball” approach to matching patients and providers, Graham transitioned from cardiology to co-founding and leading Kyruus, a digital health company that offers provider search and scheduling solutions.
He says he knew that there was a better way to match patients with the appropriate provider, and Kyruus’ system allows patients to enter medical symptoms and book appointments.
By helping declutter the scheduling process, allowing patients to self-schedule, and get to the provider they need, doctors can spend more time with patients, and patients get the help they need more efficiently.
